UPCOMING EVENTS

PAST EVENTS

Seniors' Christmas Dinner - December 1st, 2009

The Christmas Dinner for seniors was held at the Carleton Heritage Inn on December 1st. This is now a well-established annual event, that many senior citizens look forward to. The dinner is prepared by the staff at the Inn, and is served by members of the club. This year, entertainment was provided, at very short notice, by the Sage Age troupe of performers.

"Just Because" Sale of Roses, 2009

The club held its annual  "Just Because" sale of roses on November 21st. For $20, customers received an  attractively-boxed bouquet of a dozen red roses for that special person in  their life, delivered to their door.

All proceeds from the sale will be returned to the community as donations to  charities, high school bursaries and other similar causes.

Compost Delivery, 2009

For the fourth year, the club bagged and delivered bags of high-quality mushroom compost to clients within about 15 km of Carleton Place and Mississippi Mills. Despite the need to increase the price to $6 per bag, we were able to obtain advance orders for over 1,500 bags, and eventually sold all 2,000. Bagging was done by two local soccer teams, and in return the club made substantial donations to the team for equipment, travel and so on.

Visit to the Waterside Retirement Community - Feb 3rd, 2009

The club held its meeting at the Waterside Community Centre, a newly-opened retirement community on McNeely Avenue. Corinne Hamilton, the Community Relations Coordinator, gave members a tour of the common areas, and of several differently-configured apartments.

Seniors' Christmas Dinner - December 11th, 2008

The Christmas Dinner for seniors was held at the Carleton Heritage Inn on December 11th. This is now a well-established annual event, that many senior citizens look forward to. The dinner is prepared by the staff at the Inn, and is served by members of the club. Music and carol-singing follow the meal.

Rose Sale - November 15th and 22nd, 2008

The club offered attractive boxes of a dozen roses for sale, for the third year running. The club sold 222 dozen, for a total profit of about $2,400. This money will be returned to the community in the form of donations to suitable causes.

Masker-Aid Festival and Dance - October 25th, 2008

The Masker-Aid Festival and Dance was a success, despite the heavy rain that drove some events indoors. The exhibition by Ray's Reptiles was held in the Carleton Place Theatre, on Albert Street, and the auditorium was packed. Visitors also enjoyed the Junkyard Symphony, the Scavenger Hunt and the Pumpkin Carving exhibition.  Several members of the Rotary Club operated two hamburger stands on Bridge Street, despite the rain.

Sixty-two people attended the Dance in the evening, almost all in Halloween costumes.  There were prizes for best costumes, and a number of door prizes.  Music was provided by the Standing Room Only band.  Tania Munro, of Tania's Dance Studio, gave dancing lessons at the start of the event to encourage more people to try their skills on the dance floor.

50/50 Draw - Riverside Jam - August 1-3rd, 2008

The club organized the 50/50 draw that was held as part of the Riverside Jam. One member arranged for the required license and made many other arrangements, and several other members sold tickets during the festival. Members of other local groups also help sell tickets, and the proceeds were shared with the Canoe Club and the Carleton Place Daycare

Visit by District Governor - July 8th, 2008

On July 8th, the new District Governor, Peter Bashaw, attended the regular club meeting, accompanied by the Assistant District Governor Tom Taylor.  Peter talked about the goals for Rotary, including the program to eradicate polio, and to reduce the impact of HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, infant mortality, poor sanitation and illiteracy.  He hopes to see a 10% increase in Rotary membership for the District, and the chartering of two new clubs.

Compost Sale - May 3rd and May 10th, 2008

The club ran its third annual sale of mushroom compost, delivering nearly 2,000 bags to customers in Carleton Place, Almonte, Pakenham, Beckwith and beyond. Many customers have said how well vegetables and flowers grow in soil that has been fertilized with this compost, and many have been repeat customers.

NOTES

Would you like to join Rotary?

We are looking for new members!  If you are interested, please call the Membership Committee Chair, at 613-256-6479.  Rotary is a great way to meet people in the community, enjoy social events, and help others, both locally and internationally.  We meet each week at the Carleton Heritage Inn, and there is usually a guest speaker.

Rotary Trail

You are invited to walk along the Rotary Trail, which starts at William Street by the McNeely Bridge, and runs behind the Mississippi School to Wilson Street.  Several members spent a morning recently to remove weeds and clean up the trail.  There are two Rotary benches where you are invited to spend a few moments and enjoy the scenery.
